When you think about history and Mexico there are a few locales that come to mind. The one that really stands out is the area of the Yucatan peninsula that encompasses the area once dominated by the Mayan people and where you can still find incredible evidence of their advanced civilization. Just a short drive from the high-octane resort towns of Cancun and Cozumel are examples to be found of the height of Mayan architecture and civilization.

If there is one thing that tourism in Mexico has become famous for in recent years, it is sports fishing. And the reasons why are pretty obvious. The country has over 6,500 miles of fishable coastline that is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea on the east and the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez on the west. There are a diverse number of hot spots for sport fishing that draw enthusiasts, as well as professionals, from all over the world. And to make it even more exciting, there are a number of national and international competitions held yearly in the waters surrounding Mexico.

In Mexico you can fish for over 300 varieties of fish and that number is still growing. Because of this diversity, it may actually be very difficult to decide on just one destination to visit in order to try your hand at reeling in a big one. If fishing is all you plan on doing during your vacation then you would probably find the most challenging experiences on the Pacific coast. Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, or Mazatlan are all well known for sport fishing fleets that can be chartered. And the large sport fish like Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and Swordfish are all prevalent in those waters.

When determining the best time to visit Mexico for a vacation, you should keep in mind what type of weather you are hoping for, what kinds of activities or festivals you would like to participate in, and what kind of prices you are willing to pay. It may be that cost is a factor and you just want to lie around a pool all day sipping margaritas. Another vacationer may want to avoid the rainy season and fish. While yet another may want to time their vacation in order to join in on the festivities of Carnival.

As far as weather goes, the best time to visit Mexico depends on where your chosen vacation spot will be. August and September get the most rain throughout Mexico and they also coincide with hurricane season which affects both the east and west coasts. The weather during this time of year can be very hot, humid and sticky. Central Mexico is situated on a high plain, which provides cool nights even during the summer. The southern coastal areas are always warm and can be very hot in the summer. And if you are thinking of vacationing in Baja California, be aware that it is a desert that just happens to be next to the ocean. It will be hot and dry most of the year regardless of the neighboring surf.

There are so many activities that can be enjoyed in the water while on vacation in Mexico; a short list will not do it justice. The fun can probably be separated into four different categories: interacting with wildlife, motorized water sports, non-motorized water sports, and fishing.

One of the most unforgettable experiences you may ever have is having a close encounter with a whale in its natural habitat. Whale watching has become a huge business in Mexico and thousands of people every year turn out to tour local Mexican waters to see humpback whales frolic in the ocean. This activity is more prevalent on the Pacific coast, but there are also tours on the Caribbean side of Mexico. In a similar vein, swimming with dolphins has become an exciting experience in many locales in Mexico and swimming with manta rays is a growing industry as well.

There aren’t many cities in the entire world that are larger than Mexico City, Mexico. Nicknamed, the City of Palaces and with a population of about 20 million, Mexico City is a huge, cosmopolitan city that sprawls over almost 3,700 square miles. It is located in a valley on top of a high plateau at about 7,350 feet above sea level. The place where the city rests was once Lake Texcoco. It seems to be a city of extremes and a dynamic place to visit.

Most vacationers to Mexico City will be fascinated with the history of the city itself and of the circumstances in which it came to be. The Aztecs founded Mexico City in the year 1325 on a small island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. In order for it to continue to grow, the small island had to be enlarged artificially. The city came under siege by the Spaniards 200 years later and was almost completely destroyed. The Spaniards then rebuilt the city according to their designs, which is mostly what you see today in the old section of the town.
